The Broken Marriage: Why CTOs and CHROs Don't Speak the Same Language
I sit on a Strategic Board in Paris. The CTO and the CHRO haven’t spoken constructively in 3 months. The issue? The CHRO bought a Learning Experience Platform (LXP) without telling IT. Now, IT refuses to integrate it with the Active Directory because it doesn’t meet security standards.
It is a classic standoff that costs millions to companies every year.
The Translation Gap
- The CHRO’s World: Focuses on “User Experience”, “Engagement”, and “Agility”. They see IT as the “Department of No”.
- The CTO’s World: Focuses on “Security”, “Scalability”, and “Technical Debt”. They see HR as “Shadow IT” creators who buy unsafe software.
The Role of the Architect
My job is to be the marriage counselor. But I don’t use feelings; I use architecture. We need to align on a common glossary:
- Don’t talk about ‘Happiness’: Talk about ‘Retention Rates’ and ‘Risk Mitigation’.
- Don’t talk about ‘Security Protocol’: Talk about ‘Employee Friction’ and ‘Adoption Speed’.
I speak P&L to the Board, API to the CTO, and Culture to the CHRO. If you don’t bridge this gap, your “Digital Transformation” is just a PowerPoint deck that will die in a drawer.
